About the Authors

Michael Critchley (Encounters Abroad, Encounters Book 1, Book 2) was born in Port Alberni, Canada. He earned his BSc in genetics at the University of British Columbia in Canada, his Magister Linguae in Florence, Italy, and his MEd in TESOL at the University of Wollongong in Australia. His work on English education and curriculum development in Japan has been published in books and journals, and he has worked as an English teacher, a teacher trainer, and as a counselor for students preparing for study abroad. When not teaching or learning languages, he likes to get outdoors with friends, either to the ocean or to the mountains.

Maria Shiguemi Ichiyama (Encounters Book 1, Book 2) was born in Brazil. She graduated from the Faculdade Ibero Americana de Letras e Ciencias Humanas in Sao Paulo, and earned her MA in curriculum development at the University of California, Riverside. She received a certificate in TESOL from the same university. She has taught English to students of various nationalities for over twenty years, most of which have been spent in Japan following her arrival in 1992. In her free time, she enjoys making pottery and growing orchids.

Reza Fiyouzat (Encounters Book 1) was born in Abadan, Iran, and has had a rich life in four countries. His undergraduate studies varied from hard sciences, to philosophy of science to social sciences. He received his MA in applied linguistics from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Reza has written novels, short stories, and has translated and written articles about Middle Eastern politics. He has also written for and edited political-cultural magazines with international distribution. His ESL publications include Cultural Zones of Development. His first and best English teacher was his father.

Yuka Iijima (Encounters Book 1) graduated from International Christian University in Tokyo and earned her Diploma in TESL at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. She received her MA in linguistics from Ohio University and has taught Japanese and TESL methodology at Pomona College, Ohio University and Colby College in the USA. She has published articles on grammatical development in ESL. Her research interests include second language acquisition and materials development. When she has time, Yuka enjoys traveling, swimming, and hiking.


Teri Anne Suzuki (Encounters Book 1) is a third generation Japanese American. She received her BA in music and MA in TESOL from San Jose State University. She has taught English at the University of California, Berkeley, Los Positas College, and Kawaijuku Educational Centers. Teri is a former workplace English consultant, teacher-trainer, and elementary school teacher. She has published several textbooks on developing reading, listening and critical thinking skills in English for the Regents of the University of California and Kawaijuku.
