Students learn to speak appropriately when meeting somebody for the first time. The focus of this unit is on developing topics during small talk. This unit goes beyond formulaic greetings, and looks at how to start, continue and end a first meeting successfully and appropriately.

Students learn to discuss classroom problems with a teacher in English. Students practice self identification, stating and resolving problems. They also learn how to deal with problems including absences or missed exams due to late trains, traffic jams, colds and so on.

Students learn to talk about what they did on the weekend. They give simple opinions and summaries of the weekend, and practice topic development as they sequentially recount details and past events.
