Travel
London, Morocco, Korea and Thailand

Since leaving Port Alberni when I was 18, I have done quite a bit of traveling. I've lived in several countries, including Japan, Italy, Germany and England. When I have some time, I'll upload a few short travel logs of some of the cooler places I've seen, but for now, here are some highlights.

London

Big Ben
This is a typical London shot. My good buddy Trent and I lived just across the bridge from here in "sunny" Lambeth. He stayed in London for years. I was just there a year. We found a flat together, and proceeded to get fat and out of shape. An easy thing to do when you work in a wine bar, and there's a Macdonald's on the way as you hungrily run to catch the last tube home at night.

Morocco

Morocco was one of the most memorable trips I've ever taken. As I approached Tangier, I was struck by the architecture: whitewashed buildings and stone minarets all perched on a steep hill beside a cliff leading into the ocean. Once I got off the ferry, however, I was struck by something else: "guides" who try to abuse you until you submit to allowing them to show you how to get to places that you already know how to get to. That was probably the worst memory I have of the place -- the nonstop flow of people trying to scam you. On the other hand, some of the people I met in shops were very nice and friendly.

After Tangier, we moved down the coast, and wound up staying a long time in Marrakesh (left), and on the more southerly beach area of Essaouira. The experience was fantastic: shopping in the medina, hiking up to a natural springs in the mountains, and enjoying the beautiful coastal scenery.

Korea

Since moving to Japan, I've visited Seoul, Korea twice -- both trips inspired by a craving for the food, and the desire just to explore the older areas of the city.

Seoul, a city where the people pride themselves on being quite modern and trendy, is remarkably traditional. The Korean people have done a great job of preserving more historic areas that exist right in the middle of the city. Views like these are common.

Thailand

Anatara resort in Hua Hin. A little expensive, but a great introduction to Thai style.

I love Thailand. The people are friendly, and with few exceptions, every smile you give is returned in full.

The food is superb, with more variety than any other cuisine I've tried. If you don't know Thai food, start off with "Kaao pad graprau gai" -- stir fried chicken on rice. Yummy. It's my favourite and the first dish I eat usually when I arrive in Thailand.

I've been all over the country, from Chiang Mai in the north to Krabi in the south. Two of my favourite places -- and the places I'd recommend anybody visit -- are the islands of Chang and Samed. Check here for some pics.

Climbing in Ayuthaya, the ancient city just north of Bangkok.

It's a good thing the beaches are gorgeous, because the boxed lunches on day trips leave a lot to be desired.

Jep's Bungalows on Koh Samed. I love the stars lit up on the trees. It makes for a great addition to the real stars above. Nothing like a cold beer on a sandy beach in incredible surroundings.

Get your trunk off my banana!
